The Charts

by topofthestairs @ 21 Aug. 2006 - 08:58:10

What has happened to the charts or am I just getting old. Just two or three years ago I use the listen on a Sunday, eagerly awaiting to hear what was still or what was the same number one. There is now no impetus, no build up, no .... wait a minute - of course - there is no music out there is there?
50% of the charts are samples or remakes of a time when the music mattered. And the rest is dross, pure and simple. The last number one I really liked was Barclay Narles 'Crazy'.
With music sales on a high why don't they replace Top of the Pops with something more up to date to show new releases etc. Or is it that we just, as the public, get on with it - get out there and buy our music?

Second question - has the summer finished then? Sunshine on a Monday would help.

Playlist for today: Live365 internet radio, Forever Cool, West Coast Jazz from Palm Spring California.

New Music Books

by topofthestairs @ 14 Aug. 2006 - 11:56:15

With Christmas and the New Year sales period coming up, there are some interesting new books coming up which I have added to my 'want' list and which I thought worth a blog:-

HE'S A REBEL: PHIL SPECTOR ROCK AND ROLL'S LEGENDARY PRODUCER
Mark Ribowsky Feb 07 £9.99
Published to coincide with the verdit of his murder trial, this focuses on his career and how he found that 'sound'.

ONLY A NORTHER SONG: THE SAGA OF THE BEATLES SONGWRITING EMPIRE
Brian Southall oct £19.95
If written well this is a fascinating look at the most valuable song catalogues in history.

SINGLES: SIX DECADES OF HOT HITS AND CLASSIC CUTS
Johnny Black and Mark Brend Spt £19.99
It's been said that the single is dead so this is a celebration of it's history.

...happy reading.
