Plant, Krauss, & Big Mama Thornton

by topofthestairs @ 12 May. 2008 - 07:30:10

Can't believe that this is my first blog of May. Have to get my act together. Too busy listening to music instead of writing about it.

Went to see Alison Krauss and Robert Plant at the NIA in Birmingham. Not too sure it all totally worked. The sound and the music was great and they do sing fantastically well together BUT it just seemed all a little unsure of itself. It didn't flow. I think this was their first concert of the tour plus I was way back in the Arena so couldn't pick up any nuances. Krauss annoyed me [weird I know] but she was forever fiddling with her radio mic, did not move to the music at all, in fact most of the time she looked like a scared kid and said very little. Plant was more relaxed which was to be expected. He was somewhat restrained in his movements - like the rocker he is and looking like he thought he was at an aunts birthday party he did didn't fully let himself go. The thrill for me was the 2 numbers T Bone Burnett played - as someone shouted out; 'you rock T Bone' and he sure did. The sound of his guitar aches of an age when music was so, so real. Anyway to balance my review and just in case you have tickets to see them and don't want to be put off, check out the following Birmingham Post review which is glowing:-

Good, good friend stayed with us over the year and we usually gab about music. She introduced me to the fantatsic Big Mama Thornton, what a blast she was. Plan to do a little more research on her and have downloaded 3 tracks from itunes. Check her out on You Tube especially the following link where she strolls on with shopping bag and weird, little hat and gloriously sings Hound Dog the way it was meant!

Very interesting post........

I'm off to see Plant and Krauss at the Wembley Arena on 22 May. And whilst (in my eyes) Robert can do no wrong, I'm not so keen on Alison's genre. I suppose I consider her style to be wailing country. And whilst I adore folk/blues, accoustic/folk/blues R&B and everything in-between, country music has never grabbed me.

BTW watched the programme on Peggy Lee last night and thoroughly enjoyed it even tho' I can say I was never really interested before

Sounds like an interesting concert. It's the Burnett I would have been most interested in as I play Blues guitar myself. He's a true innovator. Alison Ktauss is an amazing singer too.

Cheers, Tom.

i've seen the band at wembley arena, last night
a stellar concert, a spectacular night.
i literally adore the voices of krauss + plant in black dog and when the levee breaks, they made a very powerful hypnotique version at wembley .
t bone is incredible and all the band is ,as well. great musicians.
i don't know what happened in birmingham, but in london both alison and robert were confident, relaxed, happy .plant had a smile on his face so often. he's intelligent and keen, i like his projects, always NEW with quality.
unforgettable gig in my opinion.
cheers
